Summary

The maximization of log value and the production of the highest value products in a sawmill requires the ability to image through the entire log, which enables consideration of grade. So far in high speed sawmills, this determination is based solely on the outside shape of log and with no consideration of the internal characteristics in North America. Previous studies done by FPInnovations proves that Computed Tomography (CT) is an effective tool for internal defect detection and has a great potential to become an on-line scanning tool. CT will allow for better sorting, merchandizing and allocation decisions of logs and will guide the log breakdown optimization that extract the maximum value from the logs, leading to increased value recovery. In 2017-2018 year, the FPI research team continued the low cost CT project by developing and maturing the patented Polar Algebraic CT Reconstruction Technique (PART) for log scanning with the focus on motion tolerance robustness, reconstruction data efficiency and reducing the hardware cost. FP team also made R&D progress on CT feature detection and parametrization and went through a Strategic Research Alliance (SRA) pipeline to establish an industrial partnership with plan to commercialize FPI CT technology in 2-3 years’ time. FPI CT validation. Feature identification and SRA progress will be demonstrated in this report. Results showed support commercialization of the proposed technology in the future.
