Summary

Oriented strand board (OSB) sheathing is used throughout Canada in various applications, namely residential wood-frame construction. Its use as exterior sheathing is limited by the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) [1] and some other provincial codes, in particular the Alberta Fire Code (Article 5.6.1.2) [2]. Recent trends in new residential construction have led to smaller lots and houses that are closer together due to urban densification. There are growing concerns of the potential for fire spread due to shrinking limiting distances between structures. Several large fires at sites under construction have highlighted a need for better means of protection and improvements to traditional construction practices.
