Summary

The effect of different harvesting practices on the tension of wire rope in winch-assist operations is not well understood. Since the introduction of winch-assist systems into British Columbia, there have been safety concerns about the effects of high tension spikes and stump redirects or rub trees on the integrity of the wire rope or other system components. Regulators have identified these factors as a safety priority for winch-assist systems. The objectives of this study were to compare wire rope tensions at the feller-buncher and at the anchor machine during production logging and using stump/tree redirects.
