Summary

Scanner scaling debarked logs have been successfully implemented at a B.C. coastal sawmill. However, the forest industry is interested in scanner scaling logs over bark because of the costs of purchasing and installing debarkers on site, disposing of bark and some customers purchase logs with bark intact. This has spurred industry interest in technologies or methods for obtaining a volume under bark when using scanners to scale logs over bark. This Info Note provides a model for predicting volume under bark from over bark diameter measurements on Douglas-fir logs
