Summary

The recovery of harvest residues in a cut-to-length harvesting system is generally done in a separate operation after harvesting the merchantable wood. However, integration of residue recovery with the extraction of traditional products would decrease the overall cost of recovery operations. Two case studies of integrated roundwood and biomass extraction revealed that the savings can range from 29 to 63% compared with the use of a separate residue recovery operation. Recommendations, advantages, and drawbacks of integrated recovery operations have been developed from these studies.
